This is the original problem from an employee...
Hereís my situation. I was in the break room with a co-worker, and we were talking about another person we worked with. He made a nasty comment, and I told him to relax a bit, because the person was actually really nice. At this, he used the spoon from the sugar dish, and threw sugar on me. I shook it off, and was obviously shocked. I told him to just calm down, and he started swearing at me and calling me names. There were other people in the break room, and one went to tell a manger that we were fighting. The manager thought that she meant we were physically fighting, which we werenít. We were having an argument Ė my coworker was shouting and swearing, and I was just trying to get him to calm down. To be honest, I was frightened, so I really didnít want to get him any more angry.
When the manager showed up, he told us to explain what was going on. I started to tell him my side of the story, when my co-worker threw the entire sugar dish at me. It hit me in the chest, and the sugar sprayed in my face, and eyes, as well as over the rest of me. It hurt, and I immediately tried to get the sugar out of my eyes and off the rest of me.
The manager did what he could to try to settle my co-worker down, but it wasnít really worked, so I called the police. I wanted to protect myself and the other people there, and have the right authorities handle the situation, which I really felt was getting quite aggressive.
I made certain that the manager told the policeman that my coworker had thrown sugarÖand a sugar bowl at me, and that he and other employees had seen it happen.
The co-worker was sent home on suspension, and I stayed to finish my day. I didnít really talk to anyone about it because I didnít take any other breaks that day. I just wanted to get my work done and go home.
The next day, I came in to find out that I was suspended, too, and that there would be an investigation. Apparently, no two stories were exactly the same among the witnesses, so both me and the other guy were fired after five days of suspension. I really donít agree with this! Is there anybody who knows what I can do?

Well you have witnesses . Get with those people and you all go to management together. If there are cameras at your job. I am sure that will been seen on them also.

calling the police isn't bad.. what if the sugar throwing employee pulled out a gun. I think you did the right thing. If he pulled out a gun and shot you then they would have said y didn't you call the police. Getting the police involved isn't wrong, HE MADE A VIOLENT ACT, THE MANAGER ISNT THE POLICE. Any violent must be handled by the police.

You did the right thing. The company is retarded. They should have taken facts and not worried about cops.

Or litigate. If the witnesses are not willing to volunteer what they saw; they can be subpoenad as "hostile" witnesses and made to testify on the stand. Or risk jail if they lie. And don't give them time to get together and collaborate. Have them all separated. This may present a difficulty. How many other people were present? Did any of them come to your defense or report what they saw to the mgr? In my opinion, and 'tis just my opinion, your calling the police and having the situation legally documented, probably caused the mgr to view you unkindly. Not fair. But there it is.

A similar situation happened on my job. I am the manager of a non-profit organization and two employees had an altercation. One of the employees called the police. I had no idea they did that and when the police got there they began to question me. I was totally lost for words. The President of my company was furious that the police was called without managements knowledge, and I think that might be the case here with you. You should have consulted with management first before calling the police and let them handle the situation the proper way. I know you were working out of implulse but most reputible company's want to always know that they are in control of matters such as this. Next time and hopefully there will not be a next time. Consult with managment before making such decisions. Always look like the person who is trying to cooperate with management when it comes to workplace issues.
