This is the original problem from an employee...
Hi,

I'm a new manager at my company. I've been working there for over five years and was promoted to manager of a new department. I am supposed to be supervising two ladies who have been working at this department for about a year. They have just graduated from college and I am about 10 years older than them.

Their last manager left two months prior to me being hired, so they were reporting directly to my boss. The issue here is that they continue to be working around me as I learn my way, and they keep going directly to my boss. Today was "Boss Day" and they gave him a card, they did not give me one. Their prior manager who left gave them several spreadsheet templates for financials and trained them so that they could carry on his work. He has also provided continued support to them without me involved. These spreadsheets are password protected with the excuse that they do not want anyone to make changes to them without their knowledge.

I did not come on strong as a manager my first day, instead I have been kind and understanding. Apparently their old manager didn't care if they came in at 10am, so I have allowed them to continue to come in at 10am even though everyone else comes in at 8am or 9am.

I have expressed my concern to my supervisor, and he is seeing the issue, but he also continues to email them directly. I do not feel like I am managing them, instead, my boss is. It's almost as if they've just hired one other person to do their job and I'm at their same level.

I'm not really sure what to do. Advice?
